I brought the thumbnail size down to 300×300 and turned off the hard cropping, as it is in the default settings in WC 3.2.6. I copied the store and updated to WC 3.5.2, added the filters in functions.php, and regenerated thumbnails. This is what I see in 3.5.2 now:
